Historical Evolution of Zamfara State’s Population

Zamfara has a deep historical background, dating back to the 11th century when it was part of the renowned Hausa city-states. It flourished as a hub for commerce, governance, and cultural development.

By the early 19th century, Zamfara was incorporated into the Sokoto Caliphate following the Islamic reformist movement led by Usman Dan Fodio. This shift significantly influenced the region’s social and political structure.

During British colonial rule, Zamfara fell under the jurisdiction of Northern Nigeria and later became part of the North-Western and Sokoto States after Nigeria gained independence.

On October 1, 1996, during General Sani Abacha’s administration, Zamfara attained full statehood with Gusau as its capital. Since then, its population has seen substantial growth.

The 2006 national census recorded Zamfara’s population at approximately 3.5 million. By 2012, estimates suggested an increase to around 4.5 million, following an annual growth rate of 3.7%.

By 2022, population projections placed Zamfara at about 5,833,500 inhabitants, with a density of 170.2 individuals per square kilometer.

In 2023, the estimated population stood at 6.05 million, increasing to about 6.27 million in 2024. Projections for 2025 indicate that the population will rise further to approximately 6.51 million.
