The Lagos State Government has announced plans to roll out special vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities (PWDs), aimed at improving identification and accessibility across the state.
The initiative was revealed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 ministerial press briefing commemorating Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in his second term.
According to Osiyemi, the Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) will be responsible for implementing the scheme. He also highlighted the authority’s ongoing work in producing customized plates, noting the issuance of 716 fancy motor vehicle plates, 347 motorcycle fancy plates, and 224 out-of-series plates for special requests.
In total, the LSNPPA has produced 11,152 standard number plate replacements, 212 motorcycle plate replacements, and 63 standard fancy replacements. Additionally, it manufactured 428 official number plates, 1,510 dealer plates, and 4,000 articulated vehicle plates.
Osiyemi also stated that LSNPPA is collaborating with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on environmentally friendly number plate initiatives aligned with the state’s ‘Go Green’ agenda.
Regarding the fading of number plates, he said the state used high-quality materials in their production.
“We should also understand that fading of the number plate is a function of the kind of material we use to wash our cars, which are very corrosive.
“We should also know that as man has a life span, so also are plate numbers; and they should be changed when the need arises,” he said.
