Types of UK Business Visas
The first thing you need to know when applying for a UK Business Visa is that there are several visa categories depending on your business goals.
Each visa type has its own requirements, benefits, and application process. Here are the main options available:
a. Innovator Visa
The Innovator Visa is designed for experienced entrepreneurs who want to set up an innovative business in the UK. Your business idea must be endorsed by an approved endorsing body, and it should be new, innovative, and viable.
- Eligibility: Endorsement from a UK-approved endorsing body, a minimum investment of £50,000, and proof that your business is innovative.
- Visa Duration: 3 years, with the option to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after that.
- Why Choose This Visa: Ideal for entrepreneurs with a fresh business idea that has potential for growth in the UK market.
b. Start-up Visa
The Start-up Visa is aimed at individuals starting a new business in the UK for the first time. You don’t need investment funds like the Innovator Visa, but your business must be innovative and have high growth potential. This visa is ideal for younger entrepreneurs or those just beginning their business journey.
- Eligibility: Endorsement from an approved UK endorsing body.
- Visa Duration: 2 years, after which you can switch to an Innovator Visa.
- Why Choose This Visa: Suitable for first-time business owners with no initial investment required.
c. Investor Visa
For high-net-worth individuals looking to invest a significant sum into the UK economy, the Investor Visa provides a fast-tracked route to residency. With this visa, you can invest £2 million or more in UK government bonds, share capital, or businesses.
- Eligibility: Minimum investment of £2 million in the UK economy.
- Visa Duration: 3 years, with the option to extend and apply for ILR after 5 years (or faster with larger investments).
- Why Choose This Visa: Ideal for wealthy individuals who prefer to invest rather than start a new business from scratch.
Key Eligibility Criteria for UK Business Visas
Each UK Business Visa type has specific requirements you need to meet in order to apply successfully. Here are the general criteria for most business visas:
a. Endorsement from an Approved Body
For both the Innovator and Start-up visas, you need an endorsement from an approved body in the UK. This body will assess your business idea and ensure it meets the criteria of innovation, scalability, and viability.
b. Investment Funds
For the Innovator Visa, you need to have at least £50,000 in investment funds. For the Investor Visa, the minimum investment is £2 million. You must prove the source of your funds and ensure they have been in your possession for at least 2 years.
c. English Language Proficiency
You must prove your English language skills when applying for a business visa. This can be done by passing an approved English language test or by holding a degree that was taught in English.
d. Financial Stability
You need to show that you have enough personal savings to support yourself in the UK without relying on public funds. The specific amount varies depending on the visa type and your personal circumstances.
e. Health and Character Requirements
Applicants must meet the health requirements, which may include a tuberculosis test for residents of certain countries, and provide a criminal record certificate for certain visa types.
